Original Oil Painting; believed to be the S.S. Corsican a historic side paddle-wheeler steamship that operated on the St. Lawrence River during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was known for navigating the challenging Lachine Rapids (as depicted in the painting) near Montreal. Built in Glasgow, Scotland, by Barclay, Curle & Co. in 1870, she was 175 feet long and 27 feet wide; it was shipped across the Atlantic in parts and re-assembled in Montreal. Initially owned by the Canadian Navigation Co. (1870-1875), then the Richelieu & Ontario Navigation Co. (1875-1907).
